As social media tools like Twitter and Facebook become core components of nonprofit communication strategies, there is a corresponding need to assess how well programmatic messaging and organizational identity are propagating in those channels: “We Tweet; is anybody listening?” In addition, nonprofits have an increasing need to know on what blogs, websites and other online venues they and their issues are being mentioned and discussed, both favorably and less favorably. This webinar will show you how to create a listening dashboard for your or your organization’s use. I will also provide an introduction for social media goal-setting and a template for tracking your social media engagement.

A social media audit of systems, implementation, strategy, and culture offers a comprehensive evaluation of the state of your organization’s social media strategy, processes, and systems. Audits are not a judgment, but rather a statement of where you are along a continuum of practice, and offer practical insights into your social media execution and effectiveness. In this webinar, we’ll discuss the right time to consider a social media audit, the goals of the audit, inquiry tools and resources, what a 360-degree audit entails, and what to do with the results. We’ll also explore case studies of two nonprofit social media audits, what the organizations learned from participating in this process, and how the audit information translated into ramping up their strategic social media engagement.

It is well known that most nonprofits are exempt from federal and state income tax. They are also frequently exempt from real property tax, but one tax exemption that even nonprofits sometimes find elusive is “sales and use” tax.

With sales tax rates approaching 10% in some jurisdictions that combine state and local sales taxes, it’s an important exemption not to overlook. However, some nonprofits fail to take advantage of these exemptions because of the complexity of determining in which states an exemption exists and because of the lack of uniformity from state to state.

Though several states provide a variety of sales tax exemptions to various industries and organizations, most only make an exception for certain groups or types of nonprofits. In the majority of states the key to a sales tax exemption is the designation as a charitable, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. For the other types of tax-exempt nonprofits, a state sales tax exemption is much less certain, and requires a careful reading of each state’s tax code and regulations.

Even with a 501(c)3 designation, charitable nonprofits in some states are still not exempt from sales taxes and, even if they are, procedural requirements must be strictly followed to actually receive a sales-tax exemption. This is true in nearly all states that offer an exemption from sales tax to nonprofit organizations.

This program will give you a broad overview of sales tax exemptions available to nonprofits; clarify how to obtain, manage and maintain these exemptions, and provide valuable reference information.

Takeaways:

A public relations strategy is often dismissed as a pointless frill but Monica Collins, communications expert, will speak about the myriad ways a media strategy can be a key investment. Our breadth of understanding of nonprofit sectors and issues helps us to ask the right questions and explore the relevant concerns to assure integrated explorations and solutions. Case studies of some of our projects and articles on strategy, identity, capacity and facilities can be found at www.synthesispartnership.com.

Many nonprofits use earned income as a source of revenue generation. For example, it was estimated in 2008 that nearly 70% of the $1.4 trillion generated by nonprofits came from the sale of goods and services. However, despite its long-standing, common use in the nonprofit sector, the area of earned income for nonprofits is often wrought with misconceptions and misunderstandings which can lead to untapped sources of revenue or unknowingly jeopardizing the organization’s exempt status. Especially in light of current economic challenges facing the nonprofit sector, nonprofits should become familiar with the basic principles related to earned income to best help their organizations more effectively further their missions.

Nonprofits are increasingly turning outside to discover and spread insight about their programs, target markets, science, and processes. A powerful organizational model to do this is the knowledge network (also called community of practice). The knowledge network rides less on formal partnerships, markets or hierarchies and more on powerful social ties to drive collaborative innovation and learning. Not all knowledge networks are created alike, but there are some success factors that are universal, such as agile leadership, real-time meetings, effective use of technology, and clear mission and measurement. Please join Kate Pugh, author of Sharing Hidden Know-How (Jossey-Bass/Wiley, 2011) in a lively discussion about knowledge networks. We’ll look at ten years of research and practice on knowledge networks, as well as some highlights from a 2011 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

She spent 25 years in the nonprofit sector, first in New England and then in Ohio and knows firsthand the challenges faced by nonprofit leadership: philanthropic development, board governance, employee supervision and training, communication with constituents, and more. She has worked as a professional within the Jewish and general communities, including The Family Place in White River Junction, VT, the Dresden School District in Hanover, NH, the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland and the Cleveland Hillel Foundation.
