We believe facilitation is a powerful tool for helping people reach better decisions, often faster, with much higher levels of buy-in and commitment.

• Better decisions…because a diversity of views were openly shared and considered.

• Often faster…because the processes used promote productive and efficient communication. With much higher levels of buy-in and commitment…because those impacted by the decisions were involved in creating them.

We believe that…

•The more people in an organization who understand and are skilled at facilitation…

•And the more that facilitation is used in leading people, managing teams, creating strategy, developing products, running meetings, etc. …

•The more productive and effective an organization can be.

Most managers can easily identify an employee performance issue, but what is difficult is effectively communicating this information. From the employee’s perspective when their manager does initiate a discussion it can come across as finger-pointing and disciplinary. Naturally this approach causes most people to react defensively, leading to a confrontational exchange and a strained relationship. It can seem easier to avoid these conversations altogether, particularly when the issue relates to difficult to quantify and discuss behavior based issues. This session will teach an intuitive process for crafting hearable sayable performance feedback talking points to drive the change you are seeking while avoiding the difficulties that usually accompany these exchanges.

Gain practical skills to confidently take on those seemingly awkward yet critical exchanges in a far less stressful way.

Takeaways:

Find the right words to address disruptive behaviors involving interpersonal skills, temperament, tone and approach, etc.

Use a diagnostic tool to accurately and quickly assess the overall performance effectiveness levels of your entire team.

Present feedback in a manner that minimizes awkwardness and defensiveness.

Underneath what we see as a “meeting” is an unseen structure that influences how we behave. This webinar will help you recognize these structures and identify more effective ones for your meetings.
The webinar teaches an approach that is different from other approaches to “better meetings.” You will learn to recognize and choose the most effective structures for particular meetings. Leave this webinar having the tools you need to run successful meetings – without relying on meeting “rules,” facilitators or special training.

Many nonprofits often desire certain legislative and public policy changes by our legislators and publicly elected officials to help further or achieve their charitable missions. Nonprofits, however, often avoid advocating for such changes because the IRS rules regarding nonprofit advocacy tend to be complex and commonly misunderstood. 501(c)(3) organizations in particular are often unsure or unaware of which advocacy activities are permissible and which advocacy activities may jeopardize their tax-exempt status. Additionally, nonprofit advocacy and compliance with IRS regulations is a common hot topic for other groups such as the media, public, and authorities, especially during election years. Given the increased attention and scrutiny to nonprofit lobbying and election-related activities that is to be expected this year, 501(c)(3) organizations would greatly benefit from becoming knowledgeable about nonprofit advocacy rules.

Boards of Directors and Executive Management committees come to mind whenever we mention organizational governance. This premise that those at the top are the only ones “governing” has less and less face validity. Wherever people work together, they make choices which influence the organizations direction, choices that set standards of relationship, behavior and accountability and choices that shape fulfillment of the organizations purpose. In other words, they govern. Why not then engage them in governance processes that support sustainable value for all?

Appreciative Governance is such a process. Appreciative Governance (AG) refers to governance structures, practices, and processes that increase the organization’s capacity for innovation, engagement and productivity by systematically engaging more of the system’s strengths.

This interactive webinar will explore this new form of governance and invite participants to consider the life-giving structures and processes which would enhance their organization’s capacity to work together in positive, dynamic, and generative ways that enact their purpose.

Takeaways:

The foundation of our approach to any assignment is attentive listening to the situation, needs, culture and aspirations of the client. Our clients have represented a variety of sectors (including education, arts and culture, health care, and social services), sizes (no staff to hundreds of staff; budgets in the low six figures to the high eight figures), maturities (start-ups to well over a century old) and experience (organizations new to planning and organizations with extensive history and experience of planning). Our breadth of understanding of nonprofit sectors and issues helps us to ask the right questions and explore the relevant concerns to assure integrated explorations and solutions.

The Knowledge Network (or Community of Practice) is a powerful organizational model for organizations to innovate, coordinate, build capacity, and translate ideas rapidly into action. On November 30, 2011 Kate Pugh of AlignConsulting and Columbia University led a Nonprofit Webinar on “knowledge networks.” We introduced recent research funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and discussed the six behaviors of an enduring network: common objectives, collaborative behavior, working platform, cohesion, generous connectivity, and trust. More than half of all webinar participants were concerned about the levels of trust in their networks, and the resulting compromised collaboration. What builds trust in a network? What erodes it? What can we design into the network — into its structures, relationships, measures — to build trust and trustworthiness? We’ll look at recent research on the mechanics and science of trust, and look at several case studies of networks where trust translates into volunteerism, innovation, and collaboration. We’ll also revisit each of the 8 network design dimensions with a trust lens.

Takeaways:

A tale of two networks: What sobering lessons can we take?

What does trust look like? What behaviors do we look for? What impacts result?

What perspectives on trust have emerged in recent research?

What are the dynamics of trust: What builds trust in a network? What erodes trust in a network?

How can the eight network design dimensions build or revive trust?

We are motivated to create this platform because we believe there is no shortage of innovative ideas and passionate people ready to take on our most important challenges, but they often lack the resources they need to get started. StartSomeGood provides social entrepreneurs with a platform to raise start-up funds and build a community of supporters — all in a fun, engaging and community-driven way. Our site taps into the power of our expanding social connections, allowing entrepreneurs to ask for small amounts of money from supporters from around the world, and gives them the tools to update their supporters, provide unique rewards in exchange for support and run multiple campaigns over time.

We are international and support all forms of social good initiatives, for-profit, nonprofit and unincorporated.

Since launching in March last year we have supported 40 initiatives to raise over $250,000 to start some good!

StartSomeGood exists to empower changemakers to raise the funds and mobilize the community they need to move from idea to action and impact.
